Anya Paintsil Awarded The Wakelin Prize 2020

"Highly charged and tender."

We're delighted to announce that Anya Paintsil has been awarded The Wakelin Prize 2020. The annual award is given to a Welsh artist, whose work is purchased for the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery’s Permanent Collection: this year, the Glynn Vivian has acquired Anya's Mair at Cylch Meithrin and commissioned a new work to sit alongside it.

“I am thrilled to be this year’s recipient of The Wakelin Award and I am delighted that my work will be joining such a major public collection in Swansea", said Anya. "I would like to thank the organisers for their generosity. I am sure there are many other artists who will be supported by the award in years to come.”

Anya was selected by artist and curator Kathryn Campbell Dodd, who describes Anya's work as "both highly charged and tender". Campbell Dodd continues: "these powerful pieces made using skilful traditional textile techniques (passed down to Anya from her grandmother) embody issues about class, race, feminism and belonging that are critical to our times."
